Lower Mainland area Local Governments Elect New Representatives for Treaty Negotiations

Burnaby, B.C. … On Wednesday, January 26, 2000, local government representatives to the Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee – the body that coordinates and represents the interests of Lower Mainland area local governments in the BC Treaty Process – elected Mayor Don Bell as LMTAC Chair and Councillor James Coleridge as LMTAC Vice-Chair. Don Bell is Mayor of the District of North Vancouver and James Coleridge is a Councillor in the City of White Rock.

"There are two critical issues facing Lower Mainland area Local Governments as we move into the next decade," says Chairman Bell following the election. "One is transportation, and another is treaty negotiations." Bell replaces former Vancouver City councillor Nancy A. Chiavario as LMTAC Chair, while also retaining his position as LMTAC representative to the Tsleil-Waututh treaty table. Coleridge replaces Councillor Vicki Huntington as LMTAC Vice-Chair, and also retains his position as Chair of LMTAC’s Communications Sub-Committee (CSC).

Other elections occurred for representatives to the five Lower Mainland area treaty tables and for Executive and Sub-Committee positions. The Chair of the LMTAC’s newest Sub-Committee, Finance and Organization, is Councillor Candace Gordon. Councillor Gordon is also LMTAC’s representative to the Fraser Valley Treaty Advisory Committee (FVTAC).

The Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee (LMTAC) is the largest local government treaty advisory group in the Province. LMTAC members are made up of twenty-six individual municipal and regional district jurisdictions covering the geographic area from Whistler to Langley and Maple Ridge. LMTAC is a full member of the Provincial treaty negotiating team and provides advice and guidance from a local perspective. Since the municipal elections in November 1999, there has been a 40% change in the LMTAC membership.

Highlights from last year: In November 1999, after one year of extensive consultation with Local Governments and the public, LMTAC members adopted 35 interest statements called the LMTAC First Principles. The First Principles provide a framework for Local Government interests in treaty negotiations. Copies are available from the LMTAC office.
